I am still amazed at how Cisco and Linksys are still in business with piece of garbage equipment like this.

Anyway, my router refuses to let me forward ports. The password is still the default password (admin). When I go to forward http and ftp ports it asks for password. I type in the password and it asks for it again. It is acting like I am typing in the wrong password.

Is there anything short of buying a new one that I can do to get this stupid thing working?

Are you leaving the username field blank when you enter the password?

You could always reset it to defaults. Hold down the reset button for about 30 seconds and it will clear the configuration.

Then try again, no user name, password of admin.

Just to make it clear, it will wipe out all of your configuration not just the password.

With the user name field blank, the default password is, indeed, "password."

In addition to most likely having to reset the router to its defaults, you might also consider checking to see if there is a firmware upgrade available to bring the router up to date.

It may vary with the version. I was playing around with a version 3 yesterday and it is (was) admin.

From the Linksys user guide Page 22:
Leave the User Name field empty, and enter admin (the default password) in lowercase letters in the Password field. Then, click the OK button.

I've left it off over night, held the reset button for 30 seconds, reset it via web browser ... nothing

The default password is admin. It will take that password and let me log into it, just when I go to play with ports ... nothing.
