I have a problem with my router which I recently won in an online auction. I have a Linksys BEFSR41 4 port DSL router. I plugged my dsl into the WAN port and my two other computer in the first two ports. I went to internet option and did all the setup that was told by linksys website. I typed in the http://192.168.1.1 address on my IE broswer but nothing came up, according to linksys website, the router configuration is suppose to come up. If anyone know how to successfully make this work, all advice will be appreciated. thank you.

Does the Router run its power on tests? When power is applied to it, does all the leds come on for a moment, and then back off and the power led comes on. When the system is powered on and booted does the leds for that port come on showing a connection between the system NIC card and the Router. With the modem on, does the "Link" led come on showing a connection to the modem.
If the above does not occur when the router is powered on, and then when the system is powered on, then there is something wrong with the router.
If it does, the router is most likely OK and you have software configuration problem.
Go to Network settings, and locate the TCP/IP - line for your NIC card. Select it and Properties. Under IP Address tab, the "Obtain an IP address automatically" and the "Detect connections to network media" should be selected. WINS Configuration tab, "Disable WINS Resolution". Gateway, none. DNS Configuration, "Disable DNS".
Then select the line for your NIC card and properties and make sure the Drive Type tab, "Enhanced Mode (32bit and 16) NDIS driver" is selected.
Does the port leds on the router blink when you send the http://192.168.1.1 address to the router? Showing that the system is sending data to the router.
Do the system and cables work with the modem and Internet?

One other possibility...
You can change the router's LAN IP addres from its default of 192.168.1.1. If it's been changed, you'll have to reset the router back to factory defaults.

I don't know if you have solved your problem yet, but the above suggestion about "Obtaining an IP address automatically" only works after you reset the modem (push reset button in the back or front, hold for 3 seconds or until Diag LED goes red - factory defaults are now set). Obtaining an IP address only work is you have it set up to dole out addresses (DHCP). This may have been turned off by the original owner.
Also, unless you know the router is not changed - you cannot be sure the 192.168.1.1 is now the setting for the router. Even if it is, you have to make sure your workstation is set to the same subnet (192.168.1.2-192.168.1.254), or it won't respond.

What os are you useing ? if XP goto Start run type CMD hit OK
type ipconfig /release
type ipconfig /renew
If you time out your router is not giving you a ip or you don't have you network info setup as inst. above.
If you get info back look at the gate info.
use the gateway info to type into you IE brouser, http://"the gate way ip"
I work for a ISP and have to setup router that I have no paper work on or info about and this allways works for me, good luck.
