I am attempting to connect a Linksys BEFSX41 to my Motorola SB5100 cable modem.

I am not able to connect to the internet when I plug the passthrough cable from the modem into the WAN port of the router. All lights in the router say go, but I am not able to configure them to work together and connect to the net. I am also using Zone Alarm PRO as a firewall, which I turned off to install the device.

I am new at working with routers. Please help!

Ok first we want to see if the computer can get to the router...

go to start>run type in command
at the command prompt type in IPCONFIG
The Router should assign your first computer 192.168.1.100
If you are getting that information then we know that connection is working good...
next login to the router http:\\192.168.1.1 default username is admin and password i believe is password (check the manual)
once logged in see if the router is getting an IP address from the internet... if its a cable connection you should get a 24.x.x.x IP address

If that is working and you still do not have internet (and it works when your direclty connected to the cable modem) then i would run an MSCONFIG and disable everything from starting with the system, next i would set your computers IP address as the DMZ and try disabling some of the features in the router config...

hope that helps

My experience with doing this to an existing setup (inserting a BEFSR41 router into a Cable setup {Adelphia}) requires that you unplug power from the modem and router setup of several hours (best over night). Then power on the router first for a few minutes and then the modem for a few minutes and last the system.

According to a Tech Support rep that I talked to, the ATM host controller keeps track of the MAC address it is talking to behind the modem (and its MAC address). In a basic configuration, this is the MAC address of your network adapter. If you change the network adapter (and its MAC address) or add a router which has a different MAC address, you have to disconnect the modem from the network for a period of time. After awhile, their server will drop the modem/MAC adapter/MAC connection and purge it from their active link table. Then when you put it back on the local ATM link, they will pick up the Modem, recognize its MAC address and then obtain and start talking to the (new) MAC address behind it.

My experience is that it may take an hour or more for it to start working again, and that you might have to repeat this whole process several times to get it working. (Was very frustrating when I was trying to test several new routers that were going to be used else where.)

If you have played with the BEFSR41 routers setting. Please reset them back to factory defaults. Also, if it is not at the version 1.44.2 level or higher (on Status page), visit the LinkSys web site and download their flash update. New routers just off the shelf (at Best Buy anyway) usually have v 1.44.3 which is not yet available for download. Then check that the "Block WAN Request" is Enabled so that you get the benefit of the routers own firewall. With ZoneAlarm, you might want to disable this if you want to use ZoneAlarm to keep track of all hits.
