My Linksys 4-port router is working fine on the Windows 98 machine (hooked up to cable modem).
98+2k -> Linksys -> Cable Modem
The Windows 2000 Pro box, however, won't do anything. It tells me there is a LAN but I can't access 192.168.1.1 on the Linksys. I know the NIC is good, and I can get the cable modem to work when directly connected to the NIC (via ~90ft cable), but not Linksys to Cable without the 98 box. The Linksys sees the NIC connections and the LEDs are on but I can't get the Win2k box to get internet or LAN. I am a network administrator (it's so easy with a REAL server and domains) and A+ Certified.

Hmm. Isn't the gateway supposed to be 192.168.0.1, not 192.168.1.1? That's what it is on mine, anyway. Did you run winipcfg?

if your Linksys router ip address is 192.168.1.1 its going to be your gateway on your win2000 pro box. also you have to put your primary DNS of your ISP on your win 2000 pro your router should have dhcp and auto configure the wan side of things for you.

Can you ping your gateway? Can you ping the other pc's. If your running dhcp on your router you don't need the primary dns, in fact you don't need to put in your default gateway on the 2k pc, the linksys router will take care of this. Are you receiving an ip address from your router? Use ipconfig, check your proxy settings, make sure they are set to auto detect. Make sure you are allowing more than 1 ip to be assigned inside the linksys software

I too have a Linksys 4-port router. Ok, config is as follows:
Host Name is filled in for WAN.
Lan IP address: 192.168.1.1, or Gateway IP.
DHCP Server: Enabled.

When I first got the linksys it worked just fine, very straight forward installation. I use it to connect three computers to internet through CableModem.
Three computers with Win98 second edition.

1-The WAN side works fine but on the LAN side it disconnects computers arbitrarily or should I say computers cannot connect to the internet or be seen on the LAN.
2-Under "DHCP Active IP Table" it does not list all computers connected.
3-The refresh button does nothing or it does not show the correct IP address for the right computer.

What I have done to solve these little issues.
One computer under "Network" is set up as DHCP and works 100% of the time. My main computer I have had to assign an address of 192.168.101 with Specify an IP Address, add a Gateway, DNS Host and DNS Server Search Order, and the third computer is configured the same way but with an IP of 192.198.1.101. All this works but the refresh button still does not work and the correct IP address is not assigned to the right computer.

I have messed with networks for years and have had to do this type of IP assigning for large servers but it appears that no one knows why.

Is there an adviced manual on Linksys and yes I have emailed them and no response.

Please advise with insight.

Is the network adapter working under Win2000. The light should be turned on both the NIC and router when you plug in the cat5. If it isn't, it could be the drivers are not right. Even if they have the lights on, the drivers may not be right.
And when you run ipconfig the gateway should be the address of the router. You could also try and reset the router as a last ditch effort.

I'm having the same problem as Cameron, but I can access the internet with all machines I just can't access the LAN on the 2K machine. I can ping the 98 machines and gatway but i get the error message Lan Not Started when trying to access it. I see the 2K machine in Network Neighborhood on the 98 machines. One thing i do know is when a change is made to the LAN in 2K you must cange your LAN settings but my question is where because it will not allow me to access the properties for File and Print Sharing or any other Lan settings for MS Network. The Lan was working just fine with the 4/port switch but this router is something else with no Technical Service. I know very little about Win2K so I need help from anyone that do PLEASE.

The solution to the Win2k problem is to install Client for MS Networks on the Win2k machine. Don't forget to reboot.

I don't understand your question. If your asking if you can have a LAN and your cable modem on one nic card per pc with your router, the answer is yes.

I'm not sure that I understand your question either. You can connect up to 4 PC to the Linksys 4 port. Your LAN will have 4 Host behind a gateway router (Linksys). You can choose to security (NT 4.0, Win2k or XP). Shared resources on each host requires that the guest account be enabled on each and shared folders setup on each. Win98 can have shares but cannot see shares on NT, Win2k and XP because of security.
I think that the answer to your question is yes.

Hi, I need some help, two months ago I purchased and hooked my linksys BEFW11S4...
I followed the setup instructions...checked my cables and hookups...the setup for my router is working but...after weeks of headaches...I cannot get on the internet...WAN seem to be not working...

I checked with the techs at linksys and they walked my thru and came to a semi reason to my problem...they think that it is a software conflict...we did check my programs for any type of program that may have been installed...but I know as far as VERIZON who installed the fujitsu modem over a year ago said, no program is needed...just hook up and it will work...and IT DID...

So, I am running win98, DSL modem from VERIZON, my ISP had no clue of what maybe wrong...can someone help me...to get on the internet...I am only working with one computer at this time due to the problem...but I do have two more I would like to hookup to the linksys router...anyway...HELP...
