The link light on the network card is on but the link light on the hub is out. The network driver is the right one for the card. i can put in all the network setting in. Ping to itself seems to be OK. Windows server 2000 reports when the cable is unplugged and when it is reconnected. Ping to a network computer fails - request timed out. Is the network card damaged or is there any settings i can make?

Time to sway until you drop. Get any other component to try. Get a known working cable, laptop or switch/hub or other device like a vtvm to test cable. Might even take an old cable and make a loopback. Lights are known to burn out and switches may not autonegotiate sometimes.
Ping to localhost is of little use in this case. On some OS's a ping to localhost only shows that the IP stack is installed, not that a card exists.

i am sorry, i don't really follow what you're saying. The link light on the network card is on, but the corresponding link light on the hub is not. if i change the port on the hub, it does not come on. i have tried taking this cable from the server and plugging it into a workstation and the same hub, and the link light come on, on both ends, the hub and the network card. So there is no problem with the cable, and there no light burn outs. Any help with what the problem is is most gratefully received.
