If you are connecting one PC directly to another PC via an ethernet cable, the cable needs to be a crossover cable.

Assign the static IP addresses for each PCs (ex. 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2) instead of using DHCP service. It may help.

You may need to add a host record for the other pc. The file is called host and has no extension, it is located at:

Windows 95/98/Me c:\windows\hosts

Windows NT/2000/XP Pro c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Windows XP Home c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

It is a text file and you need to edit it with notepad or the like. At the bottom of the document add:

10.0.0.1 pc1

or whatever the IP address and name of the remote computer is.
