Hi,
I connect my laptop and desktop with crossover via 10/100 Ethernet cable under win xp. the Ethernet adaptor shows ! sign , and sau that the connection has limited or not connectivity at all.

The computers see each other but the transfer rate is very slow. What can cuse this ?

Not the warning you see.

That warning indicates the NIC hasn't a default gateway address, and therefore can't get to the internet. That makes sense because you connected the two machines together with "Obtain IP address automatically enabled" with a crossover cable. With that configuration, and no DHCP server, Windows falls back to APIPA, and assigns itself an IP with no default gateway.

That however has nothing to do with slow NIC performance. I would look more at the crossover cable. Perhaps it's of poor quality or not crimped properly.
