I have about had it with networking. For whatever reason my Linkysis WRT310N router locked up overnight. I could not connect any of the computers to the internet this morning. Anyway, I had to reset the router to factory defaults to get any connections. Now the wireless laptops will not connect. Both will get as far as "aquiring network address", then I get a message saying I have no connection. What the hell ?!?!? I reset all the security settings on the router to where they were. I even attempted to disconnect & reconnect the wireless connections. I've been messing with this for 4 hours and I'm about ready to throw the entire mess off the deck.

If you reset the router to factory defaults and your laptops were previously set with wireless security and passwords enabled. Your router at default may be without security enabled and this may be causing your conflict. I hope that this saves your equipment from a premature catapult into the backyard. :) Good luck

I reset all the security features. If I turn them off, the laptops will not connect. I get a message" unable to veify authorization". If I activate the security features and set the DHCP clients on the router, the laptops will connect. But I do not want to keep the DHCP activated. I think when I reset the router, it somehow reassigned the desktop ip's to the ip's used by the 2 wireless laptops. I just don't know know to change them.

If your using DHCP, it will automatically assign ip's if you have your network interface tcpip properties set to obtain an ip automatically. To check those properties, open my network places and then click on view connections. Locate your connection and right click, select properties. Scroll down to Internet protocol (tcpip) and double click it. Under the general tab is where you can let your client get an ip automatically from your router's dhcp or you can manually assign one.

More then likely, you have WEP or WPA enabled on the router for your wireless connection and the passphrase or settings aren't the same as they once were on the clients as mentioned in previous post. To check and see if you are getting an ip, from the run command type in cmd then press enter key. Type in ipconfig/all at the command prompt to verify you are getting an ip.

If you don't want to use DHCP, you can set up static IPs for your PCs/laptops. Linksys typically uses a 192.168.1.xxx IP scheme. If the default gateway for your router is 192.168.1.1, then set up the IPs to use that gateway, e.g., 192.168.1.100, 192.168.1 101, etc. Of course, you will still have to make sure the WEP or WPA keys are set to match the key on the router.

Thanks for the help !!!!, but it turned out to be a faulty router. After numerous hours attempting to reach Linksys support, and then actually finding someone that spoke English, I was able to determine my router was faulty. So I got new one, and all is well.
