Laptop internet connection

We just bought our daughter a laptop. We set it up but have no internet connectivity. How can we get her connected and do we need to buy anything that will get it running? We have a home computer. Could we connect it to that one? If so, How?

we have internet through our cable provider and its ran by a modem

Most cable companies do not provide modems with built in WiFi. You will need to purchase a WiFi Router or plug the ethernet cable directly into the modem.
Summary: Why not use a Crossover Cable between the PC and Laptop ?? Internet Connection Sharing by default gives the HOST 192.168.0.1 and the CLIENT 192.168.0.2. A router will need to be manually configured.....
Summary: laptog is connected to internet, desktop is connected to laptop via ethernet crossover cable. I have been trying to set up ICS so through my laptop acting as gateway i could access on demand internet...
