I have recently accuired a new laptop witch i would like to link to my home pc they both have working network cards in them and i have linked them with a cable both the machines are running on win xp and when i tryed to run the network setup wizard i get the disconnected media message can any one tell me why it dose not let me connect the Pc's the cable works perfectly fine but the wizzard will not accept a direct connection any help welcome ty ben vine

Nope its a normal RJ-45 cable i have already checked that. :( any more suggestions

If you are not using a Hub/router/switch you will need a crossover cable between the devices. It basically connects the transmit wires from one NIC to the receive wires on the other so data can flow.
