Hi!
For about 10 months I've had a notebook of the make HP Compaq nx6310,
but the WLAN with 'NETGEAR 54 Mbps Wireless Router WGR614v6' has never worked.
First, I thought it was my fault - that I couldn't set the settings right, but as time has passed I've
come to realise it seems to be something with the settings.
My father has used the same router at his office and he's got the exact same make & model of the notebook,
and his WLAN worked just excellently fine.
My Local Area Connection works, but it limits me to be at one place all the time.
Then - it's just like any other PC. No benefits of having a laptop.

This computer is a stationary PC and the NETGEAR router is primary connected to this computer as a Local Area Connection.
The network name (SSID) of the WLAN profile is still called "santonic", which was the SSID my father used at his office,
and I don't know how it appeared on this home PC and the notebook which I'm trying to connect.
When I enable the WLAN on this home PC it automatically connects to the "santonic" network...
The issue is that I can not get the WLAN on the notebook to work with the router.

I found this text in the NETGEAR manual, and it seems to be the problem:
"I cannot connect to the AP that I want from the Networks browser list

The access point is available and there is good signal strength. There are a few possibilities:

• If the access point (AP) is WPA-PSK protected, you will need to have the correct WPA-PSK
passphrase. Otherwise, the WG111v2 will still be connected to the previous access point and
you will not be able to change to the WPA-PSK access point.

• If the access point is WEP protected (either 64 or 128 bit encryption), you will be prompted to
enter the WEP encryption security information."

I can think of other possibilities as well, e.g.
I believe the settings that have been used with the router earlier at my father's office are still active and it seems that the notebook
or the PC tries to connect to the office's settings. Perhaps, then, these settings (OF THE PC) need to be changed or configured,
because they may be conflicting the settings of the NOTEBOOK.

Or, these settings (OF THE PC) need to be configured so that the signals
do not operate on the same channel/frequency?
e.g. channel 1 & channel 11

Or, the router needs to be cleaned up from earlier settings to factory condition.
How can I do this if this is possible?

I don't know - just guessing...

Can someone please give a few options step-by-step and help me out, as I'm VERY confused about this problem.

Thanks for any help.

Regards,
darkhaze

Reply:

there is a factory reset button in a very small hole somewhere on the router.
it usually takes a ball point pen to reset.
that will set the router back to factory default. then you can setup the ssid in the router for the wireless.
make sure in windows services that the wireless zero config is set to auto, and started on the laptop.
change the ssid name to something else also
