Hi
I get bogged down after setting up a small LAN by connecting 2 computers to a hub. one of the computers is running win2k professional and the other one is running win98.
from the one running win98, i can find "boo"(the one running win2k professional) but when i tried to access it, a window pops up asking for password. i keyed in the password i used for logging into "boo" but the authentication failed. i'm very positive that there's no typo......
i found the following information on the pop-up window:
you have to provide a password to access the computer
resource: \\boo\IPC$
password:

any comments appreciated.
Anthony

First oof the request you have listed in the error message is for the administrator account password for the 2000 box. When you build the box with 2000 os for the first time you are asked to assign a password to the local administrative account. This is the password you are being asked for on the boo machine. You can resolve this issue one of 2 ways. You can either create a new share for the c drive and give permissions to yourself, or you can assign administrative privlidges to yourself for the local machine (boo). The $Drive is a common NT administrator account for network admins who typically need access to drives on other machines. Microsoft set this up to match the local machines log in so it is kind of a built in administrative access.

If you're getting the IPC$ error message, it means you need to create an account on the 2000 PC for the 9x PC. Use the exact same username/password you use to log onto the 9x PC at bootup.

i have the same problem but in my case it is between a win me system and a 2k system. (which should be solved in the same way, right?)

i tried adding the win me login/password to the list of users but now instead of the IPC$ error i get another error saying my ME machine does not have the access to view my files (i have a chinese system, and since i am a poor translator i dont really know what the error msg is exactly in english... =( )

i tried changing the access of my ME system from Administrator to guest, but none of them work. in fact, even if i remove the ME user completely it show the same error msg instead of the IPC$ error...

could anyone please help me?

thx in advance
=)
