LAN & Internet connections

Specs: Windows XP home SP3, pentium 4 cpu 2 1.49 GB
My pc is connected to a verizon fios router/modem by a physical wire. My wife's laptop is connected to it wirelessly. My question is that sometimes I see two icons on the system tray labeled: Internet Connection Status and Local Area Connection Status and other times I only see the Local Area Connection Status icon. Either way my internet connection works just fine and my wife has access to shared folders on my PC. If I open both connection status windows the packets sent and received are the same although the internet status window displays additional info re:"Internet gateway". Both windows also display different "connected times".
What is their significance and why do I sometimes see both icons in the tray and other times only the LAN icon?
Sorry for being so long-winded.

Internet Connection Status is a result of using or trying to use Internet Connection Sharing.

If you disable it do you lose internet connection?
