Hey, we're looking to setup a LAN Instant Messaging system, but I have NO clue where to start.

I realize it'd be simple to setup ICQ or AOL but that'd defeat the purpose of what we need.

We are regulated by strict government rules (HIPAA) and as a result can not transmit patient information electronically without encrypting the information first.

We also transfer a lot of large data files, and this takes a long time over the Internet. We'd like to implement a new messaging system that would allow our employees instant messaging as well as file transfer over our LAN not WAN (Internet).

I've found many messaging solutions, but none that incorporate file transfer. I'm looking for something with these features that is very simple to use... as our employees are not "hip" to computers.

Any ideas or suggestions?

You could try Trillian from Cerulean Studios. Its a multi protocal chat client cabable of using MSN, AIM, YM, IRC and ICQ. if you connect Via ICQ (i think)using this client you can enable 128bit encruption for your chat/file transfer sessions!
