I had a weird time on my wired LAN on Friday. We had heavy rain (no lightning) and our internet went off. Also, something weird happened to the LAN because it stopped working altogether even after the internet was restored. I have about 7 PC's on the LAN. A LinkSys 604 router and then 2 hubs connecting the PC's to the router. Also, my sons have an old router that they're using as a hub. I have a spare Linksys 604 and swapped that in and out and after a lot of repeated connections and disconnections and ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew and removal of my sons' router/hub from the LAN I got it working. Or I thought so. Unfortunately, although it works fine for going on the internet and I can now ping other computers based on their IP address I can't ping them based on name. I have CompX on and I can ping it on the IP address but not as CompX - I get Unknown host compx. Also, shared folders on other computers can't be accessed through windows explorer.

One thing I did find is that my sons had actually connected the router they were using as the hub to the network using the WAN cable so I wonder if this screwed things up somehow when I switched on and off the Linksys 604.

Any thoughts on this would be very much appreciated.
