Subject: LAN connection over the internet
Comment:

Could someone tell me the brand of some software that i can buy that will let me run a LAN connection over the internet? I want to be able to dial in to my ISP and my friends dial in to thier ISPs and have them connect to my computer as the server. I know what VPN is and it won't work in my situation. So basically all I want to do is me and all my friends connect to our ISPs then they connect to my computer (running as the server) and see each others computers in My Network Places. All i need is software that is a server that will let me do this, and run it on a WinME computer. If you are for sure you have what im looking for, please email me in addition to posting it.

Thanks,
Trey

VPN is the only possible way. If you can't use a VPN, you're outta luck.

To my knowledge a VPN server can only be ran on Windows NT 4 or later. Is this correct? If it is, I guess I'll hafta buy Win2k.

Thanks,

I believe the statement above is correct, I believe VPN is the only way to do this, unless there is something new out there which I'm sure there is!

It is possible, just need to find the software.. I'm also in a hunt at the moment for something that will not only become a master browser for 'network neighbourhood' but also for tcp/ip and ipx LAN capabilities.
I've seen it working on a LINUX server with complex routing config files.

surely it is possible on windows98.. I'll just keep looking...

Look for any file having to do with ATM Cell Relay or VPN... I am currently in the hunt for that type of freeware as well.....
