You could connect two PC's directly using a crossover cable

Null modem cable between serial ports or laplink cable through lpt ports.

It used to be called lnterlnk/intersrv but they call it something like direct serial connection or something like that now.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

It's possible. I haven't tried it but one of your PCs will need to have two NIC cards. The modem will be connected to the PC with the two NIC cards and from that PC to the second PC using a crossover cable. I think you may have to run ICS(Internet Connection Sharing) on the first PC.

If you need to connect 2 computers and talk to each other only, use crossover cable to connect both computers.

If you would like to share Internet connection on computer A to computer B without using router, enable Internet connection sharing on computer A to accomplish this objective.
