hi
i want to network to pcs at home. i have to lan cards. one is from Realtek ethernet adapter(PCI) and the oter is Compaq Ethernet adapter(PCI). When i plug in the realtek ethernet adapter it is installed and an icon on task bar appears showing that it has been installed, but when i plug in compaq ethernet adapter in the other computer, it gets installed but an icon on the task bar appears with a small RED cross across its right side, and a message NETWORK CABLE UNPLUUGED also appears. I want to know whether it is a network card problem or some configuration problem? is thiss a natural behaviour of Compaq ethernet Adapters?
Thanking in acticipations..Also help me with some good web refrence for home networking..

As you are connecting two computer directly you need a crossover cable. It appears you might have a straight through cable. A straight through cable would be used if you were connecting through a hub or a switch.

A crossover cable is wired slightly different than a straight through cable. Any good computer store will supply a crossover cable for a small fee.
