Hello all- I run a network at an apartment complex, and am trying to find a way to keep track of users who split thier connection using a router/firewall. The server is Linux RedHat 7.1. Is there anyway to see how many users are sitting behind a fireall? I am restricting access by MAC adress but am also aware that you can assign any MAC adress you want to a router? Any ideas I could try?
Thanks -- BILL

Well Bill, the whole ideal of a firewall is to keep people from finding out what you have sitting behind it. It's not rational to try to figure away threw a firewall, unless you're trying to hack?
Technically speaking, the only way you can break threw a firewall is if it isn't configured correct. Some may be easier to break into than others (i.e. folks who set NetBIOS to run over TCP/IP), while others you may never break into.
If I may offer a more practical suggestion, I'm a network consultant and have some office buildings that have a similar concern. After asking them questions, the real concern isn't how many users, but how much bandwidth each client is using. Who cares if they have 10 or 100 PCs as long as they are getting only the bandwidth allocated to them. If this is your concern there are Bandwidth control methods you can apply to your tenants. If they want more bandwidth, they can pay for more. The control would be yours, with of course the amount of bandwidth you pay from the ISP.
What type router are you using? Sounds like your trying to keep control using Access List. Good but you can do better.
