I have a dell desktop. Last week, my computer lost the ip address (my system has an integrated ethernet adapter). I had my service person come out (since I run internet, cable and phone off one System Box) and they could do nothing with the computer losing the ip address. I tried the ipconfig release/renew with no results. I went out and bought a Linksys nc 100 fast ethernet adapter. I got it installed with no problems, and was back on the internet in no time. The bad news is, the Linksys ethernet adapter only worked for two days. Now I am back to where I started: I cannot renew the ip address, and am totally frustrated. I have no idea whether my integrated ethernet adapter is bad, and no idea how you would be able to tell if it were. The Linksys ethernet adapter no longer works. I have been reading these forums, trying to see if my question has been answered already, and so far I have not found it. If it is already answered, I apologize for taking up everyone's time. ANY help or idea of what to do is very much appreciated! Thank you so much.

Rhonda

Have you checked to make sure the DSL modem/Cable modem (whichever you use) is working correctly? It might be that your modem isn't synching to the ISP like it should. That would be a good place to start. Post back what you find out.

This could happen, if you're running a personal firewall on your local computer which blocks the dhcp.
So a refresh to the routers dhcp server never happens, you'll run into the lease time for the ip address, given by dhcp of the router, and loose the ip, because you computer can't answer to the routers request for dhcp.
