Subject: ISDN on LAN not working
Comment:

Hi guys and gals.

I have a fairly large network to look after and work in education so no chance off any fancy equipment to aid me!!

My problem is that one of my ISDN lines will not allow internet access. The line itself is working because I have been able to hook up a laptop direct to the line at ISDN 2e socket and connect to the net. The problem is somewhere in the cabling between the line socket and the router. The router is in another part of the school I work for. The router is a cisco 2600 and I doubt the problem is here because I have a second line that works. What I want to know is.... how can I find out where in the cabling the fault is without ripping the infrastructure open to find the fault??? I have only been on the job 6 months and nobody seems to know how everything is connected. I have had my lines extensively tested and know they are not at fault.

Have you checked the routing table on the router?
does the second ISDN line have the same ip range?
It might be as simple as that.

if not, relatively cheap line testers are available that check network lines (although the line must be dead).
a transmitter is plugged in at one end, and the receiver is plugged in at the other.
some of these have a range of a mile or so.
the more expensive ones will even tell you if the insulation is bad, and if the signal loss is too great. (you cant be sure of the quality of the cable, or the level of installation)

good luck

Check the spids and the access lists.
