I have a question about hooking a cable modem up to a ISA based ethernet card.

I have had a few experiences now with trying to hook a cable connection to a ISA ethernet adapter. In all cases I could not get it to work.

One time was on my own computer, a Compaq Deskpro 2000 - don't let the 2000 full you its only a Pentium 200mhz. When I had a ISA card in it I could not get it to work at all. The only way to get it to work was to set it as my client computer and hook it up to my host a P2-266MHZ. By the way, both computers have WinME.

And just today, my relatives just recently got the cable internet, and I'm the one they called to make it work, and I couldn't. I checked for spyware, adware, malware, virus, fixed the lsp stack uninstalled and deleted and then reinstalled the winsock files, but nothing worked.
Also checked the modem. The only other thing I have noticed is that it had a ISA ethernet card.

note:ther system - P2-300MHZ, WinME, 64MB RAM

They where able to get temporary use of another relatives computer with a PCI ethernet card installed.

So is it just me or is it impossible to get a cable connection to work directly on a ISA based ethernet card. I say directly because I can hook a computer with a ISA card to a computer with a PCI card and a direct connection and make it work.

When I first got the cable connection my host computer was a P166. Win98, 40MB RAM. I had two ethernet cards, both PCI - one for the cable one for my LAN.

My second computer was only a 486dx2 66MHZ with a ISA card. I could not access the internet directly, but by hooking it up to my P166, I could get the internet - no problem.

I have used ISA ethernet cards on networks with routers and have NO problem connecting to the internet. The cpu speed varies from a 486SX25 to a Celeron 667. Remember the ISA cards are limited to 10mbs connect speed and all internet traffic is TCPIP. Since cards are so cheap it might be better to get PCI ones if they fit. If the cards work computer to computer they should connrct to the internet. By the way your 4th paragraph mentions a modem? with an ISA card. How?

ISA cards work no differently to on-board or PCI, it is your networking/internet setup which is at fault.
