Yes it is. Depends if the device is programmed to respond to ICMP packets. If not ping wont work.

A lot of firewalls reject ICMP packets as it is another hurdle for a hacker to overcome if they can't discover if there is a computer at a particular address.

Hi Guys

It is possible for a device in a network to be working(for eg producing images and storing at a certain ip address) if it cannot be pinged (i.e request timed out displayed when pinged??

But other ip addresses on the device can be pinged and accessed??

according to your last post you have both interfaces in the same x.x.99.x subnet.

if you can't ping one of them it could be that your linux config is shutting down one of them or the hardware isn't enabled. Disable the working one and enable to other then ping.

not sure of your thinking here but you refer to a lan and server interfaces yet they are both in the same subnet. Usually they would be in different subnets. One going to lan for example and one going to wan.

You get no performance benefits having two nics in the same subnet connected to the same hub.

Are you ready for where Microsoft wants you to go today?
