First off i want to explain why im posting this here. I have tried the me boards, to no avail. My only other idea is to try here because it may be related to the networking of the computer. I have no idea what the problem is.

Okay i have DSL. Its external. And i have an ethernet card etc.
But this is the strange problem. For some reason the connection just doesnt transfer. I thought it was the connection, to find out it was my computer. Now when the net stops loading webpages. (chat [aim icq] programs/download programs work fine).
Now if i open my computer during this time, it will show the flashlight and searching, as if when you open a folder with lots of stuff. (temporary internet files for example). Then after a minute the flashlight stops, my comp pops up, then the computer works fine, then does it again later.
HELP

This all happened after i installed the dsl crap. And it still says DIAL UP networking, despite the fact I uninstalled the 56k modem.

Try running the system file check utility in order to maintain the operating system file system. 1. Click Start 2. go to run 3. type "SFC" without the quotes into the little box 4. Let the program run
This will test your file system the other problem is that windows ME is really bad for DSL errors. There is a glitch in the C code that will not always configure the P.P.O.E. or point to point over ethernet correctly in the actual network properties. One thing you can do to see if you have a network connection is ping your server or another node on the network.

OK, you added a DSL modem. And I assume you added a Network card to hook it up with. Now your Network code is going out to the local Network and searching for a DCHP server and other systems every 10 minutes or so and not finding one, gives up after about a minute or so.

One solution would be to buy a router (with firewall and DCHP) and insert in between the modem and the system NIC card. Then the network code can access a DCHP server, get all the network configuration information it needs about other system and go away happy.

If using PPPoE DSL and you don't plan on hooking up a router for a local network or sharing the Internet connection, you can go to Control Panel - Network settings, and locate the line for TCP/IP - (your network card), and select it and REMOVE it. Reboot and the problem should go away.

Anther way would be to read and try this #156 read it carefully. Also read the links at the bottom of the page first.
