I'm looking to telecommunite from work and live out of the are for dsl and cable. So my last resort is direcway satellite. The dl speed is 500 kbps but my upload is max of 50 kbps. I work in an office and deal with office type software. I'm not streaming or trading stock online or downloading large video/audio files. I understand it's max speed, but I have directv and get a signal strength of 98%. If I set this up, will 50 (or 47 - my guess of my anticipated upload kbps)kbps upload be too slow?

That depends. 50Kbps is as fast as a 56K dial up downloads and a dial up only uploads at 33Kbps.
Providing you are not going to be uploading large files or sending large email attachments you will probably find 50Kbps adequate.

Don't forget you are going to have to have a vpn [virtual private network] if going thru the internet to work. That will cut into that bandwidth [nothing is free].
I would suggest a VNC or PCanywhere via the internet would be a much better solution. If your work will support it you can have a vpn to your work pc and use VNC to operate it.
So instead of you sending fat network packets thru the internet you are only sending keyboard/mouse/video thru the internet.
