I have been struggling to setup IPX/SPX between a laptop running windows 98 and dekstop running windows xp. After finially getting "IPX Network Initialized" in the "Rise of the Triad" Network Device Driver (had to install and uninstall "Client for Netware") it now says:

Server is Player 1
.SendPacket: 0x10

Then it bombs to dos prompt and doesn't try to look for player 2. Does anyone have any idea what this means? I have spent two weeks so far getting file sharing with NetBeui working and the broadband with TCP/IP (both of which work a charm!) but this has finally baffled me completely!

the game should also use tcp/ip.

but if you want ipx/spx [no netware client installed] to work set frame type to 802.2 on both for the ipx/spx compatable protocol from ms.

Thanks for the tip, thing is I'm playing the dos version since the winrott is too slow and it only runs on IPX/SPX. It didn't say "IPX Network Initialized" before I put on netware client, and it still works after uninstalling (got this tip from another forum member). I've set both to 802.2, but it still gives me the packet error. What exactly does this error mean?

XP does not allow direct port access, most DOS based software like Games require direct access. there is an interesting article here about DOS under NT4 which the basics apply to XP, you may have to refresh page to get it to load correctly.

The bottom line is XP is based on a 32bit intregrated O/S whilst MS-DOS is a 16bit O/S with a GUI aka W9x.

Also see MS-DOS Netware (IPX):

You would have better luck with two W9x or MS-DOS PC's.

Thanks, I have managed to get it working with Windows 98 before very easily, and they work a charm, it's just it would be alot more convenient to have it working under XP; I'm also just interested in seeing if it can in fact be done going XP to 98 via IPX. I tried WinRott, and they managed to see each other, but it gets stuck just before the game is about to start, one computer saying its waiting for master to finish setting up, and the other waiting for player 2 to join!

Are there drivers that can be loaded to get DOS in XP to communicate with DOS in 98?

"Are there drivers that can be loaded to get DOS in XP to communicate with DOS in 98?" NO but if install on the DOS PC Microsoft Network Client 3.0, it may communicate with XP in IPX, it does using the TCP/IP protocol:

Thanks for the links, I'll give Lantastic a go since it seems quite simpleto get going, although I couldn't actually get a working link to the dos client as the microsoft ftp seems to be down. Does anyone have a mirror of it anywhere?

Excellent, I've got the files for MS Network Client for DOS, and I'm going through the setup on wown.com. Just wondering, should it be installed on BOTH XP and 98, or just 98?

"Forget XP IT HAS NO MS-DOS"

It should be installed in REAL DOS ie you need to tweak the settings so you can reboot into a DOS environment when playing the game.

Be wary thiis may not work, it is easier to run DOS LAN Games in a pure MS-DOS6/PC DOS7 or compatible environment.

Personally I have found trying to run MS-DOS based software in the NT Family is largely problematic.

Thanks for all your help, I guess the best thing to do is use 98 until some better source ports become available!

Thanks again!!

I have a DOS 6.22 system and Win XP system. Can I transfer files between the two with Microsoft Client 3.0?
