when i try to play games like duke nukem
or red alert 2, my first computer can detect
the second computer but the second computer cannot detect the first computer
im currently using a crossover cable to connect between the 2 computers.
for tcp/ip or netbios protocols it will work
but not for ipxanyone here have any suggestions?

yes, purchase a 10/100 hub and 2 rj-45 lines. This will be a much more efficient setup. also, make sure both your network cards are 10/100 for optimal performance.

erm it seems a bit too expensive to buy a
10/100 hub just to use IPX protocolanyone here have any solutions without
having to buy additional hardware or any solutions that are cheaper?anyway thx to westwood1 for the suggestion :)

Check to see if the ipx protocol is installed on the machine at all. Right click on network neighborhood and go to properties, and look for IPX/SPX-compatible protocol. If it isn't there, click 'add,' click 'protocol,' and go under 'microsoft.' Choose the IPX/SPX one and install it. You'll need your windows cd, so have it handy. If it's installed on both machines, well, then I don't know. I the same exact problem with Duke, and this fixed it. Hopefully it works for you, too.

i have IPX/SPX protocol installed on both computers but the problem still cannot be solved
im currently using ICS from Windows 98 to share internet connection between the 2 computers will that affect IPX/SPX protocol?
and may the problem be from my crossover cable?
ps:
im able to play LAN games using TCP/IP,
netbios(after i remove the IPX/SPX protocol and use netbios to play duke nukem)
except IPX/SPXis there really no solution to the problem?
btw thx to ed for the advice

Crossover cable is not the problem as tcp/ip network works. Check frame type in the ipx/spx protocol settings. that should be 802.2; if I remember correctly. Basically all machines on the network should be using the same frame type. Auto setting (default) may not work properly.

Why are you even contemplating IPX, IPX/SPX is for Networks that are using Novell Netware servers, TCPIP is all you need

I tried Dilawar's method but it doesnt work
:(im getting sick of installing IPX and uninstalling it and restarting my computer
to test to see if IPX works
(cos i need to uninstall IPX in order to use netbios to play duke nukem)i really cant solve the problem and im getting tired of it
i think that my problem is one thats really hard to solve or maybe i didnt give enough details abt my computer
anyway thanks to all of you who helped
i really appreciate that :)

at home i have 3 computers networked up and they run old dos games like duke nukem and rise of the triad and doom. They run using the IPX protocol - but as one is running windows milenium and the otherss are on 98 - we occassionally have problems running the games. They don't hapen 2 often but the dos box will minimise during gameplay on the pc running millenium. I don't know wether this is helpful to you or not but i am currently trying to get IPX installed in DOS - if yu can do this then u might find that you have fewer problems. By the way - you might also like to know that we do not use any form of NOvell client support or Netware - or any of that crap.
bye

I have the same problem, but I think i found
the problem. Do your computers have different Windows. Then you should download Direct X 8.0. Or you should disable the internet connection sharing.

I am having probs with Toca2 on spx when i turn my thrustmaster ffb wheel on i cannot see other computers but they can see me.
With the wheel turned off it conects ok.
any help would be great.

Ok, I've been messing around with IPX settings in XP for awhile now. Originally Red Alert 2 worked in IPX for me with two XP machines. Then I had the same problem: One machine seeing the other, while the other one dosent show up. I played with all the netwrok settings in Red Alert 2 as well.
Now I'm a network of an XP and 98SE box.
Anyways, I think I found a soultion this time. On my XP box (Which I use as my server), I selected the properties of my LAN NIC. I then selected the properties in IPX/SPX protocol. I changed Frame Type to 802.2 and the Network number to 00000001 (leave the internal network number).
Dont forget to change the Frame Type to 802.2 on BOTH computers.
This seems to work so far... I'll check back when I screw around with this some more.
Post replies on how this works for you guys.
