I am trying to network two systems together using a crossover cable and going card to card, with out a router. One system is configured correctly as I have used it several times and it works just fine. However, I just put in a new ethernet card in my mothers win 98se system and it seems to be configured correctly, even showing itself in the network neighborhood. However, when I use IPCONIFG in command.com , it tells me that there is no IP or anything else. The system isn't seeing the other. WHY????

Your problem is trying to establish ip from DHCP and none DHCP server on either machine. Here is what you have to do: Manually assign IP for both machine in the same subnet.
Example:
192.168.0.1
255.255.255.0
192.168.0.2
255.255.255.0Also making sure that both in the same workgroup or you have to manully access to other using the run command as: \\192.168.0.1\c$
Goodluck

Ok...Lets see what happens, I know that the cable is ok, and that both machines are on the same workgroup, soooo..... Everything should work. Right now the Main Machine is using IP 169.254.113.119 and a subnet of 255.255.0.0
So the other should be.... 169.254.113.120
and 255.255.0.0 Correct????

Sorry a no go....I want to remind that One machine is configured correctly, and that the other is seeing itself, however appears to have no IP address, even when specifically entered, when the IPCONFIG command is used in command.com. I am really running out of ideas...and things to check....

Ok did some pingging to see if I could better pinpoint the problem. The machine can ping it's loopback name and address, as well as its own name, but not the IP address.

I'm a bit confused.
How did you use ipconfig on your mother's 98 machine? IPConfig is a win2K/xp utility.
MCSE, MCSA Messaging, baby!

really???? Huh...works great..I have no idea why if its not supposed to. It is 98 second edition and I ran it out of the command inside windows.

The 169.254.113.119 address is invalid. That address is given when the system cannot obtain a valid address.

I did a full OS reinstall hoping windows would fix it by itself...Sure enough something must have been wrong in the system files...It works just fine now..OH and IPCONFIG works great still..only It is labeled as windows 98 IP Configuration...So I think it was part of the package...we just never knew about it, or something to that effect.

ok if both systems are windows 98 or other than xp (withough the network wizard) in order to get internet on the second computer you need to set up a gateway. if it fileshareing you want then you need to install a driver for it from the [add] button in the network properties.
and as mentioned above, computer 1 needs an ip thats different from computer 2.
and the subnet mask needs to be the same on both. dont forget that you must have both computers domain name the same and also for some odd reason in order to network windows 98 you need two user accounts with the same name. the best bet is to make an administrator account on both. good luck
