I've just moved and re-established my home network. D-link 713P router to DSL. 3 systems on the network, 2 ME and one 98SE.
All machines except mine work like a charm!
On my personal box (ME), the network logon and password disapeared during start-up. All connection lights are on at the router and my NIC. IP set itself to "autoconfigure" so of course I can't ping anything.
What I've tried:
winipcfg - won't release renew does nothing
ipconfig - ditto
-Removed/reinstalled nic card
-changed card to another slot
-used msconfg to shut off everything extra at start.
-tried every network setting I can think of
-gone into the registry and cleared the NIC and login settings: the NIC reenstalls and defaults to the 169 IP addy
-took out the 3 com card and put in a D-link NIC, same deal
-removed and reinstalled networking
-replaced the cat5 cable with a new oneAll I can think of is the missing login that I can't seem to get back. I've spent 2 days searching google and the net for an answer...
The lights are all on but no connection is made, or, TCP/IP is being blocked somehow.
This same set-up worked for a year prior to the move, I'm pretty sure it's a windows glitch.

The 169. address means that it is not connecting to the dls route or the dsl router is not set to pass out ip addresses (dhcp). Are your other computers set to obtain address automaitcally? Can you get into the router and see how that is setup?

Yep,
The other computers on the network are set for DHCP use and the router is working fine and accessable from 192.168.0.1 (ecept from my box wich sees nothing)
I've deactivated the auto config addy in the registry per the MS tech site. Now I get 0.0.0.0 with no ability to renew. Ping of loopback works fine at 127...
I still think it's a software issue, maybe a "lose the login" feature...
Thanks.

Is the light on where you plug into the router? Do you have Client for Microsoft in My Network Places/properties? Try switching the cable for another computer.
You haven't gotten to a login issue as the computer needs an ip address first.

Light is on at the NIC and the router. I took the new cable from one of the working networked PCs.
Client for MS Net is in the networking section of the control panel but under My Network Places is only ADD, the Wizard, Content IE, & Entire Network.
When I right click for properties I get the networking section from the control pannel. (Didn't know I could do that, thanks!) Client for MS Networking is installed there.
When I reboot the lights for the router connection go off and then flash when booting to a steady green when the desktop loads. It seems like the router is seeing the NIC?

Have you tried plugging into a different port on the router? Go to one of the other computers and do a ipconfig/all or winipcfg. Write down the address/subnet/gateway and dns server address.

I had a computer that I couldn't get to release the IPs. I tried and tried all the usuals. Finally filled in the address blocks to MAKE it have a particular address. It still didn't work. When I went back and told it to dynamically assign address it kicked something and worked fine since. Might not fix your prob, but could be worth a try. jer...

Hey., try to go into you TCP/Ip settings and changed your protocol and make netbios the default protocol and make sure your firewall in me is disable.

Take jer's advise... assign it a static IP address, reboot, and then reenable it as a DHCP client. There is a bug in mickeysoft and a technet doc for this is available, but I can't remeber the bug id.
