Subject: IP keeps changingOS: win 98/ win xpCPU/Ram: p III/ 128 |
Comment: I am trying to connect to my Office PC, using PC anywhere and some other “Remote Control” software’s. But each time I start those software, it assigns a new IP address for my PC and for the office PC too. So I am unable to connect two pc’s. I don’t know how it happens. Is it possible to fix an IP address for both of the pc’s so that I don’t need to ask someone else to stay in the remote pc just to tell me the IP address. Although the IP address of both PC changes, but only the last numbers are changed each time. For example if my IP is shown as 202.79.48.XXX this time, all the digits in three groups will remain the same in next time, and only the last group of numbers “XXX” will change into “XYY” Can any one help me? Thanking all in advance Dilip

Reply: (edit)remote control software doesn't assign ip addresses. Your dhcp server does that. you could do static ip addressing. Otherwise you don't provide enough info to suggest anything.

Reply: (edit)As wanders says, it is you ISP that asigns your IP address when you log onto the internet. This is called dynamic addressing. You can talk to your ISP and ask them to asign you a static IP address but you probably have to pay for it. Some ISPs do it for free, most don't. I'm not sure, but I have never heard of a static IP address with a dial up. Static IP addresses are usualy used with always on connections like DSL and cable. Stuart

Reply: (edit)You can change the IP address from Control panel>>Network>> TCP/IP for for TCP/IP stack that is bound to the Dial Up adaptor but if you enter an IP address that has not be allocated to you you wont get a connection. If and when you ISP allocates you an static address, this is where you will enter it. The IP address for Dial-Up adapator is usually left at Obtain IP Address Automatically. Stuart

Reply: (edit)Any reason you can't do a direct dial between pcs? PCanywhere is great for this. If you are considering connecting thru the internet read up on VPN's. If you are sharing on each [you have to to be able to access files] and on the internet you are broadcasting come hack me unless you use a vpn.
