I have a wireless netgear router wired to my pc and wirelessly to my laptop. I disconnected the wire to my pc and used the wireless net on my laptop for a few hours. i then pluged the wire back into my pc and tired to get on the net but couldnt. i dont know much this kind of problem but i am getting a ip address of 169.254.72.222
and a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0.
I have red that this ip address is the adress windows gives u if it cant find one. Can anyone please help me? cheers.

That's correct, the 169. address is called an APIPA address.
With your computer plugged into the network, open a command prompt window and type the following:
ipconfig /release
followed by:
ipconfig /renew
Then, type
ipconfig /all
If you still have an APIPA address you're having issues, likely with your NIC or your DCHP server. If however, you have an address similar to the one on the laptop then you're likely ok and it's time to try surfing to see if it's now working properly.

when i try to ipconfig/renew it comes up saying "an error occurred while renewing interface local area connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. request has timed out."
It also says the ip address is 0.0.0.0
and the subnet mask is 0.0.0.0i dont have a clue what this means, can anyone help me out?

sounds like your pc is confused as to which connection to use. easist thing to do is disable the interface you are not using.
you do this by going to lan connections and right mouse click on either the wired or wireless icon. Enable/disable will be one of the top choices.
Imagine the power of knowing how to internet search

hi there,
try this for resolution:
open a command prompt:
type in " netsh winsock reset " & press the return key:this uninstalls your TCP/IP stack(the software that governs your connection protocol) and forces the OS to reinstall on the next reboot.
the problem you are having is all too common when the TCP/IP gets corrupted in some manner, IP addresses do not get assigned correctly etc, also, make sure that your NIC(start>control panel>network connections>(R click)>properties)settings are set to allow DHCP(auto configure).
keep us all posted if this resolves your issue please?!?

'netsh winsock reset' worked fine i think but i couldnt find if 'allow DHCP(auto configure).' how do i find that? it still wont work. dont u think its weird that i cant access the routers settings by going through the ip address?

ok,
sounds to me like your pc and router are not talking to each other...your router will be on a 192.168 address but your NIC will be on a 168.254 address, therefore they will not be communicating to each other.to allow your pc to let its IP address be assigned by your router follow this......
click on "Start">
click on "Control Panel" >
click on "network connections" >
under the "LAN or High Speed Internet Connections" you should have an icon for your NIC(it looks like an upside down T):
right click on the upside down T and select "properties" from the drop down menu:
select the General Tab:
double click on where it says "Internet protocol TCP/IP" >
select "obtain IP address automatically",
that allows your NIC(Network interface controller) to take its IP address from your router:hopefully that should sort it out....
just remember that this is for a wired connection, you would be looking for the NIC to have a 192.168.X.X IP address (X.X representing the address id assigned by router, typically 1.101 or something like that). If you manage to get it up and running using the cable to connect to the router, then use the above to do the same to your wireless connection......
keep me posted amigo,
Sp4rky

that was on any way. on the alternate configuration tab would i be able to just use the User Configured thing and just put in the IP address i want? if so want would be my subnet mask, Default gateway, preferred DNS server, alternate DNS server, WINS server and alternate WINS server?

also in general>advanced>DNS tab is it normal to have nothing in DNS server addresses, in order of use?
And on the WINS tab to have nothing in the WINS addresses, in order of use?
Sp4rky do u have MSN, would u be able to talk me though it on there?
