I am using a Dell Dimension 8200 with a Pentium 4 chip. It runs Windows XP and I connect to the internet using a Linksys Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter. I can usually figure things out on my own but I am finding this one to be rather perplexing.
The only way that I can get the internet to work on my computer is through the following process:
1) Right-clicking the wireless connection icon on the startup menu at the bottom right hand of the screen and clicking repair.
2) After this happens it goes through a string of solutions (Disabling network adapter, enabling, and such) and finally ends with “Windows encountered the following problem when trying to repair the connection: Renewing your IP address”
3) Now I reboot the computer and the connection will stay active for about 20 minutes after it starts back up. Then I must repeat the process again. My computer reads a “Good” to “Very Good” connection at all times until I do step 2 and then it tells me it has limited or no connectivity.
Another computer connects directly to the modem and has no problem.
Any word on how I might be able to remedy this would be appreciated.

have you tried a static ip number??
go to the properties of the wireless connection, open properties of the tcp/ip and type in
192.168.0.77
click on thwe the subnet mask and it'll enter automatically.
should work then

"Another computer connects directly to the modem and has no problem."
DOH! Most ISPs only provide ONE ip address. Your direct to modem computer connect is taking that one ip.
This is why we put a router between it and our pcs. Its so we can go many to one ie. many lan ips to one wan ip.
You mention a wireless usb adapter but not what it wirelessly is connecting to. Wireless router?
If you have a wireless router you need to disconnect the pc from the modem and connect it to your router. This will free up the one wan ip.
Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search

I have tried both of the above solutions. The other computer is indeed connected to the wire less router (yes, I am attempting to connect to a wireless router) and not the modem. I also tried the static IP address solution and that kept the internet from working at all. It continually says server not found and even after I attempted to repair the connection, there was no success that followed. I ended up having to change back to the original "obtain IP address manually" option in order to get it to work in its old 20 minute spurts setting. Any more ideas would be phenomenally appreciated.

You can't use any old static ip address. You need to know what your lan's subnet is. It could be 192.168.1.x If you did a static of x.x.0.x you would not be in the same lan subnet as your router and it would not work.
But you shouldn't need to do static anyway if the router is doing dhcp.
Your only problem appears to be "Renewing your IP address"
phearce the first thing we need is clarity of the facts. I am going to assume the following;
1. both pcs are connected to the router.
2. both pcs are doing dynamically assigned ip [dhcp clients]
3. router is configured as dhcp server and is handing out the ip addresses to both pcsCorrect me if this is not accurate.
go to each pc. go to run and type cmd and hit enter. In the resulting black box type ipconfig and hit enter.
What are the ip addresses of each pc?
Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search

I have exactly the same problem except that after months of resetting my ipconfig, it finally will not connect at all. I have tried a new ethernet card, resetting my ip with netfix etc and I cannot get anything to work. My laptop works fine with the same connection.
