Hi,

I have an interested problem, I have not been able to find a solution anywhere on google.

I want to access a shared resource on a server. I can use the IP Address of the server it is on OR I can use the name of the server which has been registered through a WINS server.

The two locations are as follows:

\\172.16.8.5\i\sys\uma3\app

and

\\tltc_apps\i\sys\uma3\app

If I use the first link (with IP address not server name) and navigate to the executable, it has a 'File Download' dialog box (the same as if you wanted to download a file). The 'Save' button is greyed out and you can only click on Open. If you click Open, the resource runs perfectly and has access to the folder on the server and all the .dll's and other files in it.

If I use the second link (with server name) the application runs without popping up a 'File Download' dialog box.

My question is, why the difference?

Many Thanks

xscript

When you ping "tltc_apps" does it reply with the ip address of 172.16.8.5 ? make sure you have the right server.

Hi,

Yes, it is the right server. I can access the same resource on the server. This is what I mean, it is very weird, if I access it with the UNC \\IPADDRESS\I\SYS\UMA3\APP it gives me the file download dialog, but if I use the UNC \\SERVERNAME\I\SYS\UMA3\APP, it doesn't.

There must be a perfectly good reason for this, but I don't know what it is yet. It's not an error, it's just a behavior trate that I would like to understand.
