My network connection is no longer working.
I am getting a error message when I start up Windows 98 that my IP address is in conflict with the hardware. The IP address is set to 24.249.187.1 while the hardware is 01:01:96:0D:23:54. How can I fix this so the network connection will work again.

if you read it a little close, you will see it is saying that another computer, the one with that hardware address, already has the IP address you are trying to use.

Is it possible that your ISP thinks that you are set up for DHCP and you are actually set up as a static IP address? If so, maybe they changed your IP and gave your old one to someone else.
Are you using @Home?

Yes, I installed @Home software and the connection to the LAN ddidn't work after that. Ran ipconfig release and renew and don't get message anymore but LAN still doesn't work.

Maybe you should describe your setup. Do you have two NICs, one to the cable modem and one to a home/work LAN?
Which one does the address above belong to? What type of addresses are used on the LAN (ie. 192.168.1.*)?

No, only one NIC for each computer. Modem is connected to hubs uplink port. The Network Neighborhood icon for each PC only has 1 PC listed. The connection to the cable modem works on both PCs. However there is no file or print sharing since the LAN is not working. I tried uninstalling the NIC and reinstalling but it still hasn't fixed the problem. Since the cable modem connection works it isn't the hub, cable or adapter hardware that isn't working.

Sorry for the dumb question, but both PCs don't have the same IP address do they? (the one above 24.249.187.1)

As a @home user I know that they use the subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and therefor break their networks up into 255 nodes, and one router per network segment. 24.xxx.xxx.1 in every instance I have come across is their router address so I do not think you should have an address that ended in .1
You should call their 1-800 number and give them your name so they can determine what the correct IP address is for your install but I'd bet money .1 is NOT it.

the answer is simple...
all you have to do (if you can) is just change you ip address on the problem machine, to another free number.
only change the last digit in the ip tho, eg
if the ip was 192.168.1.20
you would change the 20 to something that is not currently inuse by anther machine

I am having the same problem. I contacted @home and setup an extra IP, however, i do not know how to set it to the other computer on the hub, and / or change it... any help would be nice....
I am running Windows XP Beta
(yeah, MS beta tester hehe)
same config as win2k
