My internet can't connect to the server... I have a LAN connection through Michigan State University Ethernet... I've tried to repair the connection but it says the following steps failed: renewing the IP address and refreshing all DHCP leases and re-registering DNS names. I also tried to create a new connection but that won't work either. My ethernet ports and cord are fine (I hooked another computer through them to see if that was the problem)

I recently had the mydoom virus and a problem with winmg.exe that are now fixed but my system is running slower still and, of course, the internet doesn't work.

If anyone could help I'd greatly appreaciate it.

Thanks, Jessica

Go to another computer on your lan and run Start/Run/cmd....at the command prompt, type ipconfig /all
and hit enter.......make note of the IP address, the subnet mask, the gateway address, and the DNS servers.

Go to Lan connection/properties/TCPip/properties and select use the following address and put in the same info as is on the other machine (setting a static ip) EXcept you will change the last octet of the ip to make it one number different from the ip addresse of the other machine....for example, if it is 192.168.0.5, make your machine 192.168.0.6

That should get you back up and running. If not, I would check all cabling and then try a different NIC.

To test the nic, at a command prompt, type ping 127.0.0.1 (the loopback test) and then, if that gives you 4 replys ping the ip address of the nic itself.......if you get 4 replies there, it is unlikely that the nic is your problem.

The other possiblility is that your DHCP is not working....I assume that you are getting DHCP lan addresses from your school's router........if that's the case, then installing a static ip should fix things.

Okay, I've tried all that and I still can't connect. It still says its having trouble refreshing all DHCP leases and re-registering DNS names.

The following utility is a quick and easy way to rebuild your Winsock service. What it does is delete the Winsock service keys from the registry, installs two new sets of keys from a fresh Windows XP - SP1 install, and does a netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt rebuild.

The link is: Winsock Repair Utility

okay that made my internet work now, thank you very much, but now i another problem that i got rid of the other day that came back... when trying to download the blaster worm patch- the installation process closes down before it completes, my CPU usage is constant at 100% and i got a few messages right after saying that winmg.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close... i was told to delete this application by someone else before and that stopped the CPU problem and i didn't get the warnings, but.. i'm worried that deleting that before caused some other problem... does anyone know what winmg.exe actually is and if i should delete everything associated with it? how do i fix my CPU usage?

winmg.exe is a Virus which causes your computer to hang from time to time. Causes programs to close like Regedit. You can manually remove it by booting up in Safe Mode. Run regedit and delete the entries for winmg.exe. Do a search and delete the file winmg.exe and also another file winmg.pol. You'll find these files in the System32 directory.
