I have a PC running Win 7 and a laptop running XP.

I want the laptop to connect to the internet through the PC.

I have tried the usual ways but alas no success
How do I go about this

What are the usual ways? If you don't give details, people here may well waste time suggesting methods you've already tried. Neither do you tell us how you connect to the Internet, or how the two PCs communicate.

Sorry been away.

I have followed the Microsoft directions, auto assign IP and all that jazz.

I have noticed though, If I manually input an IP address it connects to the other PC as a network but internet but if I do an auto IP like Microsoft say I get nothing at all.
