Hello~
Today I set up my new home network with a simple crossover cable between the two computers in my office. I have filesharing set up and working and can print through the other computer but I cannot get internet sharing to work. I have dial up service, compuserve if it matters, and I would like to be able to be on the internet on both of these computers at the same time. I have tried everything I know but I am a novice at networking and have no idea what i'm doing. I need to have it so that either computer can connect to the internet and the other computer can access the internet too. Both are XP systems.
I would greatly appreciate any help on this subject as I feel helpless right now because I'm so new at this, lol.
Dave.

The computer which has the direct connection to the internet will be your other computers Internet Provider
For your other computer to recieve internet access, your Internet Provider (e.g PC1) must be on and configured
if you ran the wizard to network then it shud of set it up its self
but things u wanna do is the following
On the PC which u cant get internet access on, run the wizard again, but this time make sure u select 'this computer connected to the internet through another computer'
on other coomp, it shud be set to 'this computer connects directly to the internet, other computers connect through this 1'
I suspect yv done all this, if so it will be down to a firewall if u have 1. DOnt forget XP enables 1 automatically wen u run Wizard, turn it off for testing purposes

Okay.. I got it so my main computer connects and the other computer can get on the net too.. but can I make it so I can do it either way? For example, if someone was on the internet on B computer, and I wanted to get on the net on A computer, how would I do that if A is set up to access the net and B is set up to get the feedback from computer A. Was that too confusing? Basically what i'm trying to accomplish now is getting it so I can connect directly to the net with either machine and access it through the network on the other one.

ahh i rebooted and im back at square one. why isn't this working?? so i guess i'm back to my first post.. i tried everything in responce one.. still same problem..

you need a router for this

PC1 & PC2router also acts as hub, and IP spooler, firewall etc
get 1 for about £30

So u followed my advice and got it workin, but after rebooting it went back to normal (buggered)
If so try repeating what i told u to do in earlier post, check to see if n e thin has set it self back to its original state, e.g XP firewall enabled

okay, this is the message im getting:
Error 800: Unable to establish the VPN connection. The VPN server may be unreachable, or security parameters may not be configured properly for this connection.
I looked under the compuserve connection and even when its connected it says its disconnected and it does say that the firewall is enabled, only problem is i can't go to its properties to disable it. I guess because its not being reported as connected..
What is reported as connected tho is "1394 Connection" but the firewall is not enabled on that. It is bridged with Local Area Network.

Try this page:

Tells you how to set up your XP firewall to allow Internet Connection Sharing (what you are doing). You'll need Administrator rights, of course.
The PC you set up ICS on and that connects to the wall is the "server". The PC connected to this PC is the "client". To access the Internet from the "client" the "server" will have to be on and ICS enabled. To have it so either PC can connect to the Internet independently you'll have to pick up a router and make both PCs clients of this. Or, if your office already has a server, you can use a hub or switch instead to connect to that.
