Hi All,
I have this connection problem which i would to be happy to resolve.I have been asked to provide internet access to my other workmates whose computers are on the other subnet.Our network has two subnets,192.168.1.0 and 192.168.2.0.We have a 4 port Broadband modem Router that connects to the internet.Our pcs are all connected to a switch which is connected to one of the ports on the Router.The IP address of the router is 192.168.1.1.The Router is also DHCP enabled.I have a second router which is connected to the other subnet(192.168.2.0)network.I have tried to connect this router to one of the ports on the Broadband Router but it all does not work since the the router are on different subnets.Can someone pls help me with ideas on how i can provide internet access to these guys without changing thier subnet.I would like to maintain the same subnets for security reasons.
Thanks.

"provide internet access to these guys without changing thier subnet"

You have three choices;
1. layer 3 switch which also is a router
2. by just a router that supports connecting two routers and a switch
3. forget your subnetting for security and put in a managed switch that supports vlans. You would create two vlans, one for one security group and one for another with the port connecting to the router enabled for both. Neither vlan can talk to each other and yet everyone has internet access. Everyone would be on the same subnet.

Wanderer,
Are you suggesting that i move the guys to the 192.168.1.0 subnet but let them connect to the other router?Pls give me an insight of the way the connection should be.

Thinking about option 3? If so then yes they would be in the same subnet as the internet router. You would only use one router since your security would no longer be based on subnet but vlan.

Wanderer,
Is there a way i can maintain the setup as it is but still provide internet access to the other subnet(192.168.2.0).I know i can use routers and define routes in the routing table but i just dont know how to configure these routers.I tried moving some of the pcs to 192.168.1.0 and it works.But i still want to leave the setup as it is but still provide internet access.

If you insist on them being different subnets, another option is to get a second WAN IP address from your Internet service provider, have both routers with their own unique WAN addresses, and each have their own unique LAN address: 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.2.1. Each router would have a LAN port that connects to the switch. But you would have to turn off DHCP and seperate the clients with static internal addresses based on whichever network address you wanted them to use.
The better option would be the VLAN switch, though.
