I've got a Netgear WGR614 router. It has a port for a dsl modem but my dsl modem happens to be usb - directly into my computer. will the router still be able to do its job?

The short answerer is no. You can use the router on you LAN, but then it is just acting like a switch, you will not get Internet access through it. You need an Ethernet modem for the router to do its job properly.

does your DSL modem have a place for ethernet connection? If it does there is still hope for the router.

Yes you can, here http://www.connecttech.net/product_info.php/products_id/1448 I am having exactly the same problem, I have been told if you connect your BT Modem to your router via a female usb to male RJ45, it won't work as the data protocol is different, can anyone tell me different? I have been looking at DM602 modems (which has a ethernet port) but would obviously prefer to spend less money if the option was available.
