internet over lan

Specs: multi
Our office has a ADSL connection assigned with a IP :; We have 3 10/100 ethernet Switches; this modem is connected directly to the switch; Though internet connectivity is there as seen in the blinking of all the visual indicator of the modem and it is ok when the modem is singularly connected to a pc, when the modem is on the switch, none gets internet connectivity; but this problem is happening on and off; part of the day the problem is on and other times it is off; when internet packets are not downloading in any pc, what we do is disconnect one switch (out of 3) from the network; now all pc in these two switches get internet packets; but this is not a standard, because even without such disconnecting of one switch, the net is working well. We have checked the uplink port in each switch; changed the uplink to another port; rebooted the power to the lan rack; Nothing works; what could be the problem ?

When you are connecting the modem directly to a switch, and I assume, you really talk about a modem, not a router/modem, how did you authenticate to your ISP?

Using a router with integrated modem, the router can authenticate to your ISP.
In that case, all internal PCs simply needs to have the routers internal IP address configured as their default gateway and perhabs DNS and all users should have internet connection.
