Hiya,

Possible this could be a firewall problem.

Get your friend to disable his firewall then ping him again and see what happens.

Cheers,
Miles

Thanks,

but I switched off my ZoneAlarm FireWall and he still could not ping me!

Do you think that this could be a FW prblem?

Some ISPs block pings requests to prevent denial of service attacks.

Test your FW by disabling it, then surfing over to:

http://www.network-tools.com/

This web site will give you the public ip address that you are using, then you can use that address to try to ping your machine. If you get a response, all is working fine with the firewall disabled. Do the same for your friend, and see if there are any problems

ISPs only block pings to their own internal hosts and servers, not to other hosts.

You should be able to ping another client of the same provider, guaranteed.

What was said earlier regarding a firewall would not refer to zone alarm. If your friend is using a router with his highspeed, then it won't respond to ping.
He has to set the router to respond to pings.

This applies if he has a highspeed connection with the following setup :

modem -> router -> computer

Instead of :

modem -> computer

Best regards,
