I've been playing around with my pc recently trying to get a wireless bridge to work. Many settings were changed on both my PC (admittedly stupid) and the routers. I've finally manged to get the bridge working, windows will connect to the other router and be assigned an IP and i am able to log into that both routers. but the internet connection is not there. I have my pc dual booting and can boot into ubuntu and that connects to the inernet fine (as I am now typing this). I would be really greatful if someone could help me figure out what i need to change for the internet to start working on XP again as there are many programs i need to use on there.
Thanks for reading and I hope you can help me resolve this silly issue soon.

First, open a terminal window on ubuntu and do an ifconfig eth0 (assuming of course it's eth0, it may not be in which case do the ifconfig without the interface name).
Write down the IP information
Address:
Gateway:
Subnet Mask:Your gateway address may be in hexidecimal so you might have to look for it. I'm a UNIX guy, not a linux person so I can't tell you where it's hidden in ubuntu. In OpenBSD I'd just cat /etc/mygate to see it as 'mygate' is the file that contains the gateway address. I'm sure, considering how ubuntu is setup, there's a 'network' applet you can open somewhere too that will display the IP information.
Once you've done the above, fire up XP. Open a command prompt window. Type the following command in the command prompt window:
ipconfig /all
Check the IP configuration of your network interface. Is the Gateway address the address of your router? Is your DNS address(es) correct? Compare the settings in windows to the linux settings. DNS, gateway and the subnet mask should be identical. If not, that's the problem.
Can you ping the router?
Can you ping anything beyond the router?
(ie: ping www.google.com)

Hi, thanks for replying, I checked all the ip settings in ubuntu and windows and the ip address, gateway and subnet are all the same . There is one thing I'm unsure of, in ubuntu theres a broadcast address which is 192.168.0.255. I have absolutely no idea what this is as I don't see an option for it in windows. Is there a way that I've somehow disabled internet connection in XP? As Im able to ping and login to the main router as well as the bridge but all websites just time out on me. I tried a system restore back to a week ago, but no luck there.

If the IP address, netmask, and gateway are there and known to be correct for the network your on (confirmed by working in Ubuntu on the same machine), the only other information a browser needs to access the Internet is DNS servers. Does the Xp show the same DNS servers as Ubuntu?
The broadcast address will be the same if the IP and netmask are the same. It is not information needed to access the Internet.
