umm..im having a problem here.

When my internet is connected through my Netgear router, it shows the speed as 100Mbps.
But when i connect it to just the cable modem, it shows the speed as 10Mbps and it is very slow. Is there ways that i can change it.

Also is there anyways that i can switch from a router to a modem without having to reset my cable modem everytime?

thanks.

So why would you connect directly to the cable modem? You give up the security the router provides.

The modem ethernet is actually running at 10mb half duplex [at least all the ones I have worked with do]. You can not change this since you have no access to the modem's configuration.

I am not going to ask why you would want to expose yourself to port trogans like the msblaster or risk getting hacked by connecting directly to the modem.

yes, the speed is 10mbps. But it doesnt matter because 10mbps is way faster actual cable modem speeds.

the 10mbps is the speed from the modem to the router/computer.

and yes you will have to reset your cable modem everytime

The ISP's end is connecting to a NIC by its MAC address. When you have a router connected, this connection is to the routers MAC address. When you have a system directly connected to the modem, this connection is to the system NIC MAC address. For security reasons, the ISP only talks to one MAC address. You have to reset the modem to break this logical connection to a specific MAC address.

Make sure you nic card is set as auto , you should not hardcode the speed and duplex settings on your pc nic card .
