Internet from a 3G Router to a Router

Specs: Windows 7

I am trying to set up a router, wich we are all connected to, to get internet from a 3G router. The reason is because the 3G router can't handle our LAN bandwith and speed demands. We have bought about 10 different 3G routers and this is the ONLY one that is compatible with the SIM Card, Cellphone tower signal and ISP. Yes we are in the middle of nowhere.

We are working around 20 computers, 3 different type of printer, and a network drive. This is why this made in china 3G router won't handle our demands.

Basically I want to use the 3G router as a modem only. Do I have to connect it to the WAN port of the main router?

You would not want to add an addtional router to the mix as this would slow down the slow connection even more.

A better move would be to put a vlan capable managed switch in and create two vlans. One for lan and one for internet access. Only those devices needing internet would get the internet vlan [no printers for example]

Note that it is not our internet demands that are big, it's our acces to the local network drive (our database).

And so if I am getting it right...
Wired to the VLAN switch :

-3G router (wireless off)
-Access points (with wireless) wireless router?
-Network Drive

And if so, would it be possible to connect the printers and the networkdrive on the access points? (For the sake of having less wiring)

You are going the wrong direction and as such will experience even slower access.

If you are talking local access to a database the 3G router has nothing to do with it.

The suggestion for vlans was to isolate switch traffic to increase your bandwith to the internet. Now you are talking doing everything wirelessly?

If you want fast lan then put a gigabit switch in and gigabit network cards in the server and workstations.

You do understand that wireless is way slower/less bandwidth than wired?

I do know that wireless is slower. What I'm trying to do is to have everything wired. But we do need the option to go wireless with a few laptops. Since we often have to work outside. Of course the database needs to be wired, printers, etc.

And plus, I think with this system I can isolate the public internet network in another VLAN for the employees personal computer on they're time off. This off course is gonna be wireless g/n.

1- Wired heavy database work 10/100/1000. With access to internet on supervisers laptops.

2-Wireless database access for outdoor work. With access to internet on supervisers laptops.

3-Public internet access for employess on they're time off.

So 3 VLAN?

public wireless internet access
private lan access with internet

This will require two access points, one for the db access and one for the public internet access.

you are opening security holes in your wired network by adding wireless to it. FYI

you ever work with vlans before?

No I never worked with VLAN before. Only regular Routers and Repeaters.

We are still a small company. As far as security is concerned, we got zip/zero right now beside can't connect personal PC to Database accesspoint. But its USB stick paradise.

Very good point about the wireless.Our next step is to disables the USB and all other outside holes. I'm not sure disabling the wireless it necessary at this point. Our confidential data is not stored here, all we have here is what the geologist need to work. Probably later if we grow bigger, in wich case we're going to hire a professional.

By that way, can I control acces to the internet and the database with this type of system, by mac address mabe?

You have a couple of options but most routers allow you to schedule/filter access via mac address.

You could create a nointernet vlan for select pcs.

The way most managed switches work with vlans is you do the following;

1. create the vlans. Think access groups
2. assign all vlans needing internet access to the port connecting to the internet router. Do not assign those you wish to have no internet access.
3. assign vlan access per port which is per pc. For example if you have a nointernet access vlan and a internet access vlan you would put a printer on the nointernet vlan but a pc to print and have internet would need to be on both the nointernet vlan as well as the internet vlan.

At this point it does not matter what gateway /ip address they get. The vlans decide what they can access or not.
