Internet Explorer Won't Work

HP Pavilion

Specs: Windows XP, Pentium III
I have been having trouble with IE for the last several days. As of Monday night my computer worked fine, woke up Tuesday morning and the internet wouldn't work.
I have called Comcast and they tested my modem and we ran ping tests which worked perfectly. Strange thing is that AIM works fine and I can connect to the web through IE about every 20 tries for a few seconds at a time. After that I get the "Page cannot be displayed" message again. I am really confused as to how my computer is pinging fine and AIM works great but IE is basically unusable.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated...

run spybot S&D and adaware personnel to check for spyware and adware, then clean your temporary internet files.

look at this:

Most likely it's a buggy piece of spyware, yes. Scan and defrag your HD, run an up to date AVS, run a spyware detector, and report back to the Security forum if you find something. You might check your firewall to see if for some reason port 80 or 8080 are blocked for some odd reason.
