While i am in windows 98 the internet connection frequently stops working but then resumes usually in about a minute. I find this strange because I can still browse network pc's and copy files to and from them. It does this with both IE 6 and the latest version of firefox. It does not do this on xp though. The wireless card is a MSI PC54G2.
Thanks in advance.

If the lan works then the issue is the wireless router/internet connection. Clearly with wireless lan transfers the nic and lan are working.

Don2006:
I have an efficient networks speedstream 5200 connected to the wan port of a linksys WRT54G wireless router. There are 2 computers wired to the router and 1 xbox wired. 3 computers plus the laptop i am currently on now (win2k) connect via the wireless. Of course not all of these computers are used at the same time. The computer with the issue and on of the other pc's (my brothers) are using the same model of wireless NIC. His functions perfectly and he is running xp home only. My pc on the other hand (the one with the problem) is running 98SE and xp pro. As I stated before it functions perfectly in xp but in 98 not so much. My hard drive did recently die on me but it was under warranty so I was ok there. After I reinstalled 98 and xp everything was fine. I can't think of any programs that I installed that might have caused this problem. This is a really irritating problem because I do most of my surfing and emailing from 98 and use xp for gaming.thanks in advance

wanderer:
Don't you find it strange that it is happening only on one pc? My brother never complains of the internet drops and I have used his pc before just to make sure and sure enough it works perfectly. Also I have another 98SE system that is on this network that is wired and it never has a problem. Also that pc is the one I use to store my backup on in case my hdd decides to fail prematurly again.thanks for the input.

It's not that it's happening just on one PC, it's happening on one OS on one PC. Off the top of my head, I would be looking for an IRQ
conflict. That would explain the stopping and starting.

Bet don2006 is right. My first stop would be to move the pci card to another slot.

98 was built when there was dial up internet for the most part. There used to be some tweaks. As with all systems your nic adapter might be tasking the the processor too much either by not offloading the networking or by some driver issue.
You have not described any reason to prove that the network in fact does "drop out". Get some performance tools running to prove that. I have don't remember 98 to tell you what tools to use.

What happens when you double click on that conflict? Isn't there a way to view IRQ assignments in 98?

It says this and it won't let me change any settings.
Input/Output Range 04D0 - 04D1 used by:

Input/Output Range 0CF8 - 0CFF used by:

Input/Output Range 002E - 002E used by:

That's not an IRQ list.

Look at that site. You maybe able to change settings in the BIOS or in the device manager by clicking on the wireless NIC and unchecking use automatic settings. I'm just going by what that site says. It's been a long time since I played w/ 98 IRQs
As a side note, you could try a USB wireless adapter instead. I bet that would solve the problem.

IRQ TABLE HAS SOME ERRORS
That's what I thought and that might be the problem. So, you have 2 choices. Try to enable IRQ steering and fix it or try a USB wireless adapter instead. It's up to you. I would try a USB adapter myself.
