Hi,
i was wondering if it is possible to share a cable internet connection between two computers (both have win98se) using a direct cable connection (in this case it is a parallel cable)? Any information on this topic would be greatly apreciated.
thanks
Shane

the direct cable is Ok or LOW to move files back and forth from one computer to another but it does not offer TCP/IP settings for a parallel connection...

It's not a suitable NIC (Network Interface Card)

It's worth the few bucks for 2 NIC Cards and a patch cable (crossover).

[2ND-PC]

Then run WinProxy or WInRoute on PC-With-2NICS to share the internet.

Or enable ICS on the one PC with two network cards. This is easier to setup than wingate

Do yourself a favor. Just get a NIC for each PC, and a hub, and no routing software and try to just setup each pc as if it were the only PC. Some systems this works on and you could save yourself a lot of time and money this way. I have 3 computers all connected to my DSL using a nic in each PC, connected to a hub the hub is connected to the dsl modem. I install the DUN etc on each PC and that's it! If this doesn't work, then go try the elaborate method. Personally I don't recommend putting 2 nic's in a PC, and running any router software, the load on that sharing PC will be very significant.

There is a program called NetFor2 (www.download.com)that allows you to connect two computers to the internet via a serial cable. It assumes that one of the computers has a normal modem, but I don’t see why it wouldn't work with a cable modem.

the cheapest and fastest way is 2 get 2 nic cards and then use a twisted cable 2 connect them.email me if u need the diagram for this cable. u dnt need a hub 4 only 2 PCs. and then install Internet connection sharing from the windows setup from control panel. install this on the PC with modem and it will ask u for a blank floppy. u make this floppy and then install that floppy program on the other PC with no Internet connection...once done...it works great...i use it every day....works with normal modem or ADSL or cable modems...let me kno if u need the cable diagram..
I am also working on using a parallel cable to share the internet...so far i found out that u hav 2 instal Virtual Private Networking VPN from the communication options in the windows setup from control panel..once installed it gives u a 2nd dial up adapter which u can then use to share the internet connection after running a Proxy server program on the host computer with a modem.....
drop me an email if i havent explained it well here...
good luk.

Hi!

Yes, you can share connection with winroute lite! You can download 30-day trial from tinysoftware web-site http://www.tinysoftware.com

For sharing connection you need only one computer with working internet connection and parallel cable. Also you need windows directcable or similar parallel connection software configured propeply.

Good luck!

Ps. For me it took about 24h to make working connection between my laptop and desk-computer, because of bad tcp/ip settings...

I have two pc's each having there own nic and modem. They are connected to each other through a crossover cable. I want to share an internet connection for both pc's. The problem is that I wish for both of them to be host's. ie: if pc 1 is connected to the internet it will provide pc2 with internet and vice versa. Is there anyway of doing this without the use of a hub? This means it doesn't matter which pc you use to connect to the internet first. Thanks for any help you can offer.

I dont think its possible, unless you have 2 phone lines.

If you want each pc to host, each pc will need a modem, and be connected. I suppose you could run them both int oone line, but then they cant both be on at the same time,

Hope this helps..
