I have never done it but I understand that you have to install ICS from the WinXP CD onto the machine/s that are not running WinXP in order for it to work.

See the WinXP Help files for better information.

No.

You have to enable ICS on the external (internet) connection on the laptop. Then, by default it will give the internal (LAN) NIC the following TCP/IP info:

Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

By default, ICS will configure clients with IP information if you want to let it. I prefer to statically assign the IP info myself. For your PC, if you statically assign, you'll want to enter the following information:

Address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: use your ISP's DNS server(s) addresses here.

If you don't know them offhand (ISP's DNS server addresses) you can find out by opening a command prompt window and typing the following command:
ipconfig /all
Look for the IP information attached to the external connection (this is the information provided by your ISP). Enter those DNS addresses on the client.

Once you've done the above, ensure both laptop and PC are in the same workgroup and that the XP firewall is allowing the client PC to connect to the network and your setup should work.

Why not get a router and be done with it? Is this broadband? If so, just get a SOHO router for cheap. It adds the benefit of protecting BOTH computers from hackers.

The thing is everytime I enable ICS on laptop, i get 2 dialog boxes on both i click ok (one is on lan addressing, other is on nat) but then each time i check properties and sharing tab, i see ICS not checked.

And clients ip addressing is not defaulting to 192.168.0.2, stays dynamic.

Any reasons for this..
