Using Speedtouch 580 router and have successfully installed Belkin F5D7010 network card on my Dell laptop running Win XP Pro. Excellent signal and strength as shown on the Belkin Wireless Utility but can't get Windows Explorer or any other application requiring internet connection (ie Norton Antivirus Update) to actually connect. Something needs to be configured but I don't know what or where this needs to be done. Does anyone have any clues PLEASE! Thanks.

Are you getting an IP address from your modem/router? What is that IP address?

Start-->Run-->Type CMD-->Click OK-->Type IPCONFIG-->Hit Enter

I looked at the manual for your modem and by default your modem should be giving your laptop an IP address like 192.168.1.64. Subnet should be 255.255.255.0 and Gateway should be 192.168.1.254.

Please post what you find.

Did the same on my PC that is connected to the router via USB and got the following:

DNS Suffix: lan
IP Adress: 10.0.0.1
Subnet Mask: 225.225.225.0
Default Gateway: 10.0.0.138

Do I have to edit the ipconfig on the laptop to match?

Sorry, just repeated the process again on the laptop and it shows the following:

DNS Suffix: nothing shown
IP Adress: 169.254.91.130
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway: nothing shown

Now I'm really confused. What do I do?

If your IP address starts with 169.x.x.x, Windows has assigned you an automatic IP because it did not receive one from your modem/router.

What does this mean for you? Most often it is because your modem/router is set up not to give out ip addresses. On your desktop pc, open Internet Explorer and type http://10.0.0.138 and hit enter. You will probably need to enter a username and password to get in to the modem/router's configuration. Once in you need to look for a setting called DHCP and make sure it's enabled. I have a feeling it may be disabled. After enabling, you may have to save your changes and reboot the modem/router. Then try connecting again with your laptop.

I don't where to direct you next. If you are for sure connected and not getting an ip address, than either your laptop is connecting to someone else's wireless connection that doesn't have dhcp enabled or you have a firewall like Norton Internet Security blocking your activity. Disable your firewall and see if that helps.

Try going into IE and checking the LAN connection (Under Connections tab) and make sure that Automatically Detect Proxy Settings is NOT checked.

No, that page should be blank.

Have you gone into the router set up page (you should do this with a cable, not wirelessly) and checked all the router settings.

You need to enable dhcp on the router itself. Some PPoE accounts form ISPs require that the log in info is present in the router before they will allow you to access them. So you have have your username and password set up in the router, not only in your computer for your e-mail and such.

And turn off XP's easy wireless setup stuff. That can trip you up sometimes.
