Hello,

I have a DSL modem, and a Cisco 2950 switch. Do i need a router in between if I want the computers connected to the switch to have access to the internet? My guess is yes but i'm not sure. So i would use a crossover cable between a D-Link router and the switch and let the DHCP of the router assign the ip add and gateway, etc... ?
Do i need to do any configuration to the switch?

Thanks.

Yes, you should definately have a router between the DSL modem and the 2950. I'm pretty sure you could set it up without a router and have it work but I would use a highspeed internet router myself (and I do, I have a 2900 XL at home right now that's plugged into my Dlink DI-604) as it provides firewall protection at the very least...as well as NAT.

Setup, yes, you'll want to setup your default VLAN1 to your network. At home I'm using 192.168.0.X and set the switch to 192.168.0.250. My router is 192.168.0.1. On the switch be sure to add your Gateway....it will be your router's IP address. This is just a generic setup to allow all ports to operate on that subnet. You don't really require anything more detailed than that.

Do you know how to setup the default VLAN and set the gateway address?
